Practising driving with a teen

Learning to drive takes time beyond formal lessons. Calm, regular practice with a trusted adult helps a young person turn instruction into sound habits, better judgement and confidence on familiar roads.

Before you set off

  • Choose a familiar vehicle and confirm that it is safe and properly insured.
  • Check the learner’s current licence restrictions.
  • Display the required L sign.
  • Agree on the route and one or two skills to practise.
  • Begin in conditions suited to the learner’s current experience.

During the drive

  • Start with short drives on familiar, quieter roads.
  • Give directions early and use calm, consistent language.
  • Focus on one issue at a time.
  • Allow time for the learner to observe, decide and act.
  • Gradually introduce busier roads, unfamiliar routes and more challenging conditions.
  • If communication or safety begins to deteriorate, find a safe place to stop.

After the drive

  • Discuss the drive after parking, not during a stressful moment.
  • Begin with what went well.
  • Choose a small number of priorities for next time.
  • Keep a simple record of practice and areas needing attention.
  • Ask Alfredo what to reinforce between professional lessons so guidance remains consistent.

When practice becomes stressful

It is normal for practice to feel stressful at times. If tension begins to affect communication or safety, pause the drive and return to it another day. Professional lessons can also help identify priorities and give families a clearer plan for practice.

Professional lessons and home practice

Professional lessons and supervised home practice complement one another. Alfredo can identify priorities, teach safe techniques and help families understand what to reinforce between lessons.
